How to read a depth of field chart
Understanding Depth of Field Now that you have tackled the exposure triangle , it’s time to move on to some more creative stuff. Depth of field, also known as DoF for short is something that you should master. In order to calculate the depth of field, one needs to first decide on what will be considered acceptably sharp. More specifically, this is called the maximum circle of confusion (CoC), and is based on the camera sensor size (camera type), viewing distance and print size. The default is to say that features smaller than 0.01 inches are unnecessary, when viewed in an 8x10 inch print at a distance of 1 foot (~25 cm). If you set the camera's focus to the hyperfocal distance, your depth of field will extend from half of the hyperfocal distance to infinity—a much deeper depth of field. Complete Digital Photography, Ben Long, 2012. Another important control for landscape photography is depth of field, The focal point always lies within the focal range, or depth of field. In the images above, the focal point, denoted by the red box, stays at approximately the same location. The depth of The depth of field or focus range extends beyond the focal point, as the f-stop increases from f/5.6 to f/16.
How to use the DoF Calculator. Hyperfocal distance: The closest distance at which a lens can be focused while keeping objects at infinity acceptably sharp. When the lens is Hyperfocal near limit: The distance between the camera and the first element that is considered to be acceptably sharp when
Depth of Field Chart I thought I'd post this depth of field (DOF) chart for those of you still not clear on the concept, or how and when to apply it. I think this chart is pretty self explanatory. Alternatively, the depth of field can be based on when the circle of confusion becomes larger than the size of your digital camera's pixels. Note that depth of field only sets a maximum value for the circle of confusion, and does not describe what happens to regions once they become out of focus.
10 Apr 2017 In macro photography depth of field is especially important to ensure the details of your subject are sharp. Use these 5 tips to get the best
Depth of field charts and the scales that appear on the barrel of the lens make assumptions about print size, viewing distance and as well as what most people consider to be "acceptable focus" or sharpness. You'll find that there are differences in the depth of field given by different sources (i.e., different charts and different lenses) and Depth of focus is the image-space complement of depth of field and is related to how the quality of focus changes on the sensor side of the lens as the sensor is moved while the object remains in the same position. Depth of focus dictates how much tip and tilt can be tolerated between the image plane of the lens and the sensor plane itself.
Learn how depth of field (DoF), can enhance your photos and the three main There are several on-line sites that will provide depth of field charts for your camera and lenses. If you enjoyed reading this tutorial we've put together a series of

If you have not read part one you can view it here. The DOF Calculator I used shows results to the second decimal place, with many instances DOF equaling In this B&H article, Todd Vorenkamp describes how to calculate depth of field mathematically. or “theory” of DOF become a cold, hard fact with mathematics, then keep on reading.
